How to get acquired by Google

Written by Aviram on .

Firebase is a young startup - the company was founded in 2012 - that was recently acquired by google. The acquisition size was not disclosed, but is almost definitely in the tens of millions of dollars.

Firebase does not have any patented amazing technologies that google had to own. Also, they have just finished a funding round one year earlier - so the startup definitely did not need the money and wasn't desperate for an acquisition. So what made google so eager to make the deal?

Firebase started as a chat API service. In other words, they allowed developers and web site owners to easily provide chat services to users. But soon after launching, they noticed the users were using their chat service to transmit data; for example, game developers would use the chat service to synchronize the game state between different players. The machines were chatting, not the humans.

The Firebase founders decided to give their users what they really wanted: The ability to perform functions developers need, such as database access, automated code for login, and other useful components. Developers started using these services and the user base grew. When google acquired Firebase, they had over 100,000 developers using their code (up from 50,000 one year earlier) and they were growing 20% per month. So in just 2 years (3 years if you count the initial chat product that was since abandoned) the company completed full circle.

How hard is it to follow Firebase's example? Lets look at the important points.

The first and most important reason google acquired Firebase is their user base and user growth. Reaching 100,000 developers is a huge incentive for a company like google. The growth rate was also impressive; Firebase was charging money for their advanced packages, but even with no revenue at all, the growth is enough to get noticed by the large companies. Google provides various development platforms and would like to have developers stick with the google solutions - having a new company coming into the scene with such momentum was bound to make google take notice.

What about revenues? Profitability? I doubt that was a factor. Google makes over $50 Billion every year and the revenue from Firebase would be inconsequential. In fact, the general rule for many acquisition is that revenue and profitability matter much less than user base, market impact and momentum.

So how would you duplicate Firebase's success? First, make sure to launch quickly. Firebase actually launched the wrong product to market. But had they waited, they wouldn't have found it out. By launching quickly and building a user base, they were able to see what the users really wanted.

Second, pivot quickly. Many startups pivot after finding the original idea wasn't "the one". So while pivoting is absolutely ok, pivoting slowly is absolutely not ok. Firebase quickly switched (or more like transitioned, since they kept the old product running) and provided a new service that better matched what their users wanted.

Next, focus on user acquisition and growth. Firebase had a free tier where users could sign up quickly and without a hassle. This helped establish a strong user base; as users recommended the service to their peers, the growth was strong.

Once a strong growth is achieved, Firebase then had to focus on scalability, and offer related services to enhance the service offering. This is the fun part, but frankly - at that point it's a lot like skiing down hill. It may not always be easy, but it's usually fun.

Launch fast, pivot quickly, get many users and show growth. You now have the formula; the execution is in your hands.
