What happens when you miss your shot

Have you ever tried rock climbing (or indoor wall climbing) without safety equipment? This is a lot like how running a startup feels like.
You have a high goal, and you must keep climbing. You can't just stay in the safe position you are currently at for too long and every step forward is potentially dangerous, but you try and do it anyway.

No one climbs without safety equipment, and so falling from a climbing wall is scary, but safe. In the startup world, on the other hand, if you mis-step you fall down and may face serious consequences. There is no safety net in the startup world, otherwise it wouldn't be called a “venture”.

In order to properly manage a startup you need to shoot high; some startups want to change the world, or at least the way we are doing certain things. No startup wants to be a mediocre solution to do something that's already being done today.
In a startup, you have a high goal, and like climbing to the top of the mountain it's risky and difficult – and occasionally (ok, not really occasionally, more like “very often”) startups miss their shot for a lot of different reasons.
Sometimes, when you miss your shot you can recover – just like when you mis-step while rock climbing you may regain your balance. But sometimes, you crash and fall. That's a part of the sport.

What happens when a startup misses its shot? I wish I can tell you it's not a big deal, but it actually is. A startup crashing is painful, and difficult. It's depressing and frustrating. But here's the thing: no one dies just because their startup failed. And there are a lot of things worse than missing your shot.
Sure, for some people, a startup failure is the end of their quest; these people realize the startup life wasn't for them in the first place, and failing just re-enforces that fact. But many others, once they recover from the failure, pick themselves up and try again. A 'serial entrepreneur' is someone who went through several startups, trying again and again, often missing again and again.

Lets first get this out of the way: you can't build a startup with a safety net. If you think you have some kind of safety net you are either deluding yourself or you're not really taking a shot at anything. In order to build a successful startup, you need to try and take that shot and realize you may miss and it may hurt. You need to realize that after you miss the shot you may decide to completely quit the game, or you may get up and try once more. This is the lifecycle of the startup, and the game doesn't work in any other way.

Zeno of Athens is famous for founding the “Stoicism” school of thought. Stoicism is especially popular with startup founders for a lot of reasons (for one, it provides practical ways to deal with both large wealth and chronic lack of money), and one of those reasons is the practical way it gives to deal with potential failures.
According to Stoicism, the fear of failure is much worse than failure itself. When you rationally look at the actual outcome of failure, you almost always realize you are worrying too much. “The worse that can happen” is not that bad when you really quantify it.

Use this practical way to help you aim high. Try to quantify what may happen if you miss that shot, and realize it will be bad, but not so bad that it's not worth trying. Then, give it your best shot.
