The second chance to make a first impression

shake hands

There’s a big difference between knowing what is the right thing to do, and actually doing that thing. In the startup world today, it’s very easy to get lots of advice. Books, blogs and stories everywhere are full of rules, guidance and advice on what is the right way to build the product, do business development, marketing, sales, etc.

Of course, we all know that the really hard part is to execute on this advice (another hard part, by the way, is knowing which advice is right for you). Startup life is difficult as it is, and you can’t do everything you’d like to do. There are only 24 hours in the day, only 7 days in the week and we are all humans. Even if we got the perfect advice, it would still be hard to follow it correctly; Michael Jordan can explain to me in details how to dunk from the foul line, but I will probably fail doing it when I try it myself.

For me, although I’m at peace that failing to dunk from the foul line will never happen for me, other types of failures are frustrating. The most strict judge of my performance is myself; knowing what I needed to do and failing to meet that goal is disappointing. When someone is guiding me in the right direction and I fail to properly execute, I have no one to blame but myself.

I’m not here to tell you how to deal with the disappointment of not living up to your own expectations. But I do have good news. Even if you didn’t do things perfectly the first time, you almost certainly have a chance to try again.

It could be something small: maybe you got a hot introduction to someone and failed to follow up properly; a few weeks have passed and now the introduction is almost completely cold. The best thing would be to climb into a time machine, go back and make the connection properly; but since that would be somewhat difficult, just try to get a second chance: don’t waste too much time and energy apologizing for the late reply and just try anyway.

It could be something bigger: maybe you released your first version and it’s completely buggy, or has the wrong set of features. Throw it to the trash, go back to the development environment and put out a new and better version rather than dwell on how screwed up the current version is.

There’s almost nothing in the startup world you can’t try a second time: I’ve seen startups doing a complete company reboot, changing the product, market and business model. Your second chance is available to you, and it is better than giving up.

Don’t get me wrong: doing things right the first time is much better; your chances of success dramatically fall after that first time. If you can execute well and get the right advice, you’ll do phenomenally well. But if you somehow mess up or things don’t work out perfectly, don’t use it as an excuse not to try again; not trying a second time has a guaranteed 0% success rate. Trying again, even if the chances are low compared to the first time, still has a success rate that is higher than zero.

It’s psychologically hard to try a second time if you messed up the first time, especially when it’s your own fault. It’s tempting to think that the chance is gone forever. I want to help you erase that excuse from the dictionary: the second chance is almost always available, and not trying a second time is a guaranteed failure.
