Overnight success

It's great being an overnight success, isn't it? You see these people all the time – typically in the media. They just started their startup and not long after, they are famous and successful.

Seeing this can trigger certain reactions for those watching. Some startup founders feel inadequate; I had this feeling when I was turning 30. You see, when Michael Dell was just 27, he was the CEO of Dell computers, who was one of the top 500 companies in the world; at that time, I was feeling like a failure for not even being close to this stage.

Other startup founders want to simply give up after not being that overnight success. If your startup is one or two years old and is not yet world-famous, you may feel it's now too late for you to make it.
For other founders it may give a convenient excuse. “I am not like one of these overnight success CEOs” they will think, and continue to operate in mediocrity, feeling comfortable in not achieving success.

The truth is that overnight success requires many years of hard work. The other truth is that there is nothing different between these “overnight success CEOs” and the rest of us, it's just an image the media likes to project and a convenient story to tell (no one would buy a newspaper to read about the CEO that worked hard for many years to slowly achieve success). This also means that you can no longer hide behind the excuse that these people are different than you: the “overnight success CEOs” are just like you, and if you're telling yourself something else, you are using that as an excuse for failure.

So now that we established that “overnight success” takes long and hard work, and that the “overnight success CEOs” are just like you, it would be nice to try and figure out how you can do it. The problem is, I don't know. Nobody does, or it wouldn't take so long. One of the reasons we like to hear about “overnight success” is that we know it doesn't really exist: just like stories about angels and magic and Jedi force – they are a fiction we love hearing about, but they don't exist in reality. So the first step in reaching overnight success is to stop trying to reach it, and instead try and figure out how to just get to success. Once you get there, feel free to tell people you reached it overnight.

Unfortunately, it's not only that I can't tell you how to reach “overnight success” I can't even tell you how to reach “regular success”. However, this is a question that becomes easier to answer as time goes on. You see, when you are just starting, you have to take big guesses and often what you are doing is the equivalent of taking a shot in the dark, in an attempt to figure out how to be successful. But as time goes on, you try and see what works and what does not. If you've been trying for a few years, you actually have a better chance of figuring out the formula. This is a good reason why you shouldn't quit too quickly, but it's also a reason not to keep going in the same direction indefinitely.

The new year is approaching. A new year is a good time to step back and summarize how you did so far. What worked well? Do more of that. What did not work? Try something else. Can you try and come up with a strategy for next year? And when you do, how will you measure it? What will define a successful year? What will indicate that this new direction is not good and that you should change course again?
This is a perfect time to decide all that.

With some luck, and a lot of hard work, the next year may be the one where you have the elusive “overnight success”. Remember not to be disappointed if it does not happen tomorrow. But also remember that you have no excuse not to try and make it happen tomorrow.

(Overnight success)

Doing what the (Korean) customer wanted

The typical advice for startups outside of the US, is to first get traction in the home market. When you approach Y-Combinator as a non-US startup, one of the first questions you will be asked, is how well you are doing in your home country.

Growing too fast

Tel Aviv does not have a subway, which is a point of ridicule whenever the topic comes up among my Korean friends. In 2015, more than 150 years after the world's first subway was built, it appears that the country that was able to build a defense system that intercepts and destroys missiles in mid-air, and the city that invented the firewall, the USB drive, and the instant messenger, cannot piece together even a single subway line, although it has been trying since the 1990's.

When things go really bad

The boxer Mike Tyson famously said: “Everybody has a plan until they get hit”. Startups are no different; startup founders usually have a plan for how to make the company succeed, but rarely have a plan for what to do when things go really bad.

The biggest challenge I have when advising Korean startups is to keep the company's size in check. I talk, write and discuss this a lot – but despite all of that, Korean startups seem to be making this mistake again and again.

Korean startups and Partnerships

Korean startups have a partnership problem. I'm not completely sure what are the reasons, but it's quite evident: Korean companies, and especially startups, have great difficulties creating overseas partnerships. In today's connected world, this should not be the case.
