Crossing inside the circle

Try this experiment: go to a large street in your area and paint a large circle in the middle of the sidewalk. Fill it with paint and make the borders of the circle dark and emphasized. Now watch how many people go around the circle rather than step inside, even though it’s just a drawing on the sidewalk.

This will probably be different from area to area. In Gangnam, where people are in a hurry and are more focused on efficiently getting to their destination you may see more people crossing into the circle’s boundary. In the suburbs, where people may be more focused on being polite and following the rules, less of them will cross the imaginary border and they will take the longer path in order not to break this imaginary border.

Startup life has its rules, but most of them are like circles painted on the sidewalk. It is even more emphasized in Korea where business has its own layer of rules, on top of the international rules, like an additional weight tied to your already heavy boots. As a startup founder, you want to follow the rules and be successful, not to mention that you may feel the pressure to “fit in”. Maybe without even knowing, you’re trying hard not to break the imaginary circle’s borders.

But the goal of the startup founder is to reach the target, not to follow the rules. If the rules are helping you achieve the target, that’s great: just like street signs may point you in the right direction. But sometimes rules are like an imaginary circle painted on the sidewalk: they have no physical meaning other than the meaning you assign to them.

This is obvious to most Israeli startups; in general, Israelis are a lot like the people walking in the busy streets in Gangnam – they have a target and are impatient to get there. They break the rules all the time, and consistently try to find the shortcuts – which often means breaking conventions, either imaginary or real. The common term is “thinking outside the box” but it’s often more like entering the forbidden circle – just taking the shortest path to the target, whatever your target is, regardless of what you need to do to get there. While doing it, you may get strange looks from bystanders or even be reprimanded for your lack of conformism. Who cares? Your goal is not to win a popularity contest or go in history as the nicest, most polite startup founders who always follows the rules but completely failed to reach the target. You goal is to reach success, and that often has a path that goes against conventional wisdom.

Israelis have very thick skin, so they often won’t notice when they are going against the conventional wisdom; Israeli startup founders especially are used to ignore their surrounding and focus on reaching the goal no matter what; it seems to work nicely for them. To be fair, it’s much easier to do when the entire country is barely 7 Million people and the country size is about one fifth of South Korea. It’s harder to do when you are in a larger country where rules and regulations help make sure everything runs correctly. This means your job, as a startup founder, is to develop this thick skin and ignore those who tell you not to do. Most Korean startup founders I talked to understand this, but still have difficulties going against the grain and stepping over what is supposedly sacred unbreakable rules.

If the direction you are going in will lead you to your target, it’s probably the right direction – you don’t need to make your path longer just in order to bypass a meaningless circle on the sidewalk. Ignore the imaginary barriers and focus on the real ones.
