Where Are Your Users?

Written by Aviram on .

All startups have one thing in common: they all need users. It doesn't matter what your business model is, or where you intend to get your funding. In fact, angels, VCs and other investors of all types, are all impressed by one number: users.

This is because users know what they like, and if you have users, that shows you have something people like. It's a basic validation of your product.

Startups like users too. You are creating something and want people to like it, and seeing users use your product is an awesome feeling. It also brings you closer to whatever revenue model you had in mind; almost all revenue models somehow include users.

So if getting users is so important, how can you do it? This is one of the questions startup founders think the most about, even if they don't realize it. Social media, PR, and most forms of marketing have the simple goal of getting more users. Startups spend a lot of time and energy on it.

But not all users are the same. Just like we say some calories are 'empty calories', some users are empty users. If you brought those users to use your product under false claims, those will be empty users; they will immediately see what you are really about, and leave.

Empty users are very simple to get. Most times all you need is a marketing budget. By putting an ad, or finding a way to the front page of google (or top of the downloaded apps list) you will get people to accidentally click on your link or download your app. But those are not real users; you brought them to use your product, but that's not what they really wanted. Sure, some of them will stay, but most of them will not. Your statistics will be incorrect and the feedback from these empty users will be worthless.

And here's the really good news: when I said 'empty users' are simple to get, I didn't mean they were easier to get. Real users are easy to get too, it just requires some thinking, and thinking is the complicated part. Consider this: if you are making a good product, users will want to use it, right? (note: if you're not, stop reading now, and change your product).

So if I was a potential user, and you offered me to use the product, why would I say no?

Following this logic, all that remains is to figure out where the users are, and how to propose them to use the product. The first part is the hardest.

Where are your users? This is very hard to figure out. But when you do, most of your work is done.
By understanding where your users are, you will discover who are your actual users; what they do; what is valuable to them; sometimes it also helps you figure out how to pitch the product.

In other times, your users will be in a place that is unrelated to your actual product.
If I want to sell something that goes well with popcorn, I may choose to offer it in a movie theater. Even if my product has nothing to do with movies, I know that movie theaters is where many popcorn lovers go. If I wanted to design an app to mothers that just gave birth, I would offer it in a forum where those mothers gather to discuss baby issues.

Finding users where they are is often cheap; you just have to show up. They are also going to be more receptive to your offer; when a user sees an ad or a commercial, they are immediately pulling up their defenses. But if you meet your users in a neutral environment that does not resemble a 'sales meeting', they will be more open to your proposal.

So cheaper, more effective and high quality; but there are no cheap tricks. Finding where your users are will require work and imagination.
But I promise that through this process you will learn and understand more about your users than you would by placing a general post on facebook to get the 'shares' and 'likes.
